The concept of ‘stumble’ is explored by faculty and staff members of The University of Lethbridge School of Fine Arts. Stumble can be understood as a transient gesture which is unexpected yet still shaped by a desire for control. This state is expressed through bodily movements, spoken language, mental blocks, psychological states, social conditions as well as through metaphor. Each of the artists invited to participate in this exhibition have been asked to think about this idea from a number of different perspectives. Some of these include:
The idea of the physical stumble — a trajectory of movement that is temporarily interrupted but which resumes often as a changed or altered action. Stumble can also suggest an oscillation between stasis and mobility.
The stumble of the mind — when we teeter on the brink of consciousness unable to translate thoughts into actual language or knowledge.
