Photography is practiced at many levels – from artistic abstraction to scientific documentation. Photographer’s objectives are as diverse as self expression, fun, reportage, science, family history or commerce.
Much of my work can be categorized as a blend of documentary realism and graphic abstraction. By concentrating on small portions of reality, I try to direct attention to the subject’s graphic components. The objective is to see beyond the obvious.
Why black and white? Because it is already a graphic abstraction of a colour-filled reality. Strangely, the historical and documentary tradition of black and white images impart a sense of heightened realism, which is perceived as being more authentic than colour images. Now that the materials and processes for colour and digital photography have improved dramatically , there is a growing interest in the craft of hand-made black and white prints, in both silver and platinum.
Is that human perversity or simply a reaction to overbearing technology?
I hope you enjoy what I have seen.
