Nick Wade Constructions paintings and drawings use forms based on domestic objects which includes furniture, tools, and alphabetical forms and spaces where he uses and thinks about these things. The loose definition of the “vessel” is important in his thoughts of the blank(page) surface, the room, the spaces held by typographical forms, a line which meets itself, and containers of all kinds. They are all kinds of spaces and forms which are holding, being held, offering or pouring , waiting , seeking and echoing.
This 26 foot long drawing/painting , ” The Open Notebook” reflects, using some of the above mentioned ideas and forms, on the difference between “what I think I am doing” and “what I am doing when I am not thinking”.
Rien Monshouwer makes paintings with brilliantly subtle colour relationships which are like memory propositions about spaces which are or have been known to him. Many of these works are based on floor plans, domestic spaces where his perceptions of time, space and his own psychic development are apparent to him. He also writes texts and drawings with text which bring the aforementioned spaces into present consciousness through concrete poetic organization of spatial detail, present time and memory. In his drawings and collages, topographic issues, (the story of a town ,for instance), can be a starting point from which the work evolves. Often text is the primary image. In his installations, which are reflections of the spaces in which they function, he evokes architectonic, political and /or historical conditions of the spaces. So, the works try to tell an unseen story of that specific space.
