Paul Smith
Scramble is an exhibition of paintings and photographs by Lethbridge artist Paul Smith. The works in this exhibition were part of two solo exhibitions at Leo Kamen Gallery, in Toronto, in 97 and 98. Last April, two series of photos were featured in “vision 20/20” at the Centre for Photography at Woodstock, N.Y.. Paul’s works are in a number of private and public collections across Canada, including in Alberta: the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Glenbow Museum, the Banff Centre, the Nickle Museum and the University of Lethbridge.
“My current work is an ongoing investigation of private and public spheres, and of figuration and abstraction. In all cases I represent these spheres with a sideways glance, concentrating my attention on the overlooked. Commercialization and the packaging of goods and values is addressed indirectly. In some of my series, discarded and outmoded objects are given first place; a second chance. A pressure is exerted against the glut of new products that surround and beckon us. In other words, I scrutinize the margins of domestic architecture for traces of daily build up and break down, minute and insistent features that attract me.”
