Recent works by Sharon Simmers and Zoltan Markan
Sharon Simmers is a thingmaker and has been making things in Lethbridge since 1995 when she moved here from Ontario with her husband, Kent, an associate professor in Philosophy at the University of Lethbridge, and her two children, Evan and Lewis. Zoltan Markan resides in Saskatoon where he divides his time between house building, cabinet making and art making.
Sharon Simmers:
I get great satisfaction from rescuing old things and giving them life – they have a past that gives them much character. I do think it is important that we create environments for ourselves that are stimulating, and which serve as a refuge from the day to day business of life. To do that we must allow ourselves some special things that speak about who we are, as well as give us pleasure, make us smile, and let our minds just wander.
Zoltan Markan:
I am a constuctivist: I build images, I build “things”, whether these are drawings, prints, constructions, paintings or buildings. My approach is to layer, to build up, to mesh. My work is stimulated by the physical environment that I live in, namely the prairie. My perception of time and space has been totally changed by it. The prairie has an austere power that is sublime, couple that with man’s imposition of his order upon the natural, the resulting visual juxtaposition is often strange. I try to take inspiration from these odd rhythms.
